After watching the modern children's adaptation of Oliver Twist, Disney's Oliver and Company, the differences were staggering.  The use of sexuality, 1980's New York City setting, and use of music adds a modern touch.  Yet, somewhere along the line, the adaptation of the Charles Dickens' classic gets lost in its own modernity.  We lose the well formed characters from the novel and instead are given stereotypes.  The plot becomes so simplified that the storyline seems flawed.  Modern adaptations do need to form around a new mindset and new ideas, but I believe that by doing it the way that Disney did, a lot of the original novel is lost.
